This Black History Month, we’re celebrating 100 years of Black women in sports—their groundbreaking achievements, resilience in the face of adversity, and the indelible mark they’ve left on history and culture.
From the OGs like Alice Coachman and Ora Washington, who were dominating way before anyone thought ‘they should,’ to icons like Flo Jo, whose nails were as legendary as her speed. I’m joined by journalist and historian Bria Felicien, whose recent article in Essence magazine chronicles the undeniable mark Black women have made on sports over the last century.
We talk about the importance of narrative control, representation and advocating for more Black women in decision-making roles within sports.
We’re diving into the struggles, the triumphs, the sheer, unadulterated excellence- and asking: What’s next for Black women in sports?

Unexpected Curves is a weekly podcast hosted by Marielle Hall, diving into the big ideas surrounding women’s sports. As a runner, athletics will be front and center, but sometimes you have to go outside the lane to see the bigger picture. No topic is off-limits, and we'll be taking a lot of left turns to find the right answers. Nothing wrong with a few curves 😉. Tune in every Thursday for new episodes on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
