The Art of Speed blazed a new path at the Jones Track in Chicago on Friday night. From the brain of Heartbreak's Lucas Larson to the running community he loves & serves, the Art of Speed fused creativity and good old fashioned racing with support from our friends at Nike Running.
We recruited young creatives from around Chicago to learn the customization game from Heartbreaker and design maestro, Greg "The Professor" Itahara. 10 artists were trained up & gifted Vaporfly Next% 2s & Aeroswift singlets as their canvas.
Racers arrived to a gallery exhibit on custom frames following the rail of turn one in the shadow of downtown. A DJ spun for maximum vibes while Savory Crust Empanadas & Heartbreaker team captain/coach Jake Spitz set up shop to feed the crowd.
At 7PM it was time for the racers to lay it down on the track. 8 heats ranged in speed 11:25 down to 4:37. Runners from the Heartbreakers, 7 on Sundays, Black Men Run, 3RUN2, November Project, GUMBO, and more brought a spirit of excitement that's been missed since the pandemic started. In the spirit of the event athletes were given a white singlet so that their mode of expression was the race itself.
The event reflected the city itself - marked by gratitude, creativity, speed, camaraderie, & competition.
