"Go Shalane!" was first screamed on the grass at Franklin Park in Roxbury, MA years before it roared from crowds along the hallowed courses of Boston & New York or trackside in Beijing. In 1997, it was not a national rallying cry yet, it was a phrase that made a young Coach Dan ask himself, then his teammates: "who is that kid who's smashing the field at states?"
Now, Shalane Flanagan is one of the best American distance runners of all-time, with 7 World Championship Medals, an Olympic Silver Medal, 18 USA Championships, a handful of American Records (including Boston), and an NYC Marathon win to her name.
According to Shalane, "Heartbreak Hill Running Co IS the heartbeat of the Boston running community." Shalane would know. She was there for our first Boston Marathon with Heartbreak Studio & the launch of our Mile 20 Community Space. And we'd argue it's Shalane who carries us - Heartbreak, Boston, and the United States - with her to the podium of the world's greatest races.

On a panel featuring BTC teammates and our own Coach Dan, Evan shared stories from his early running days and of earning his high school dream car from a bet with his dad over his mile time. His Chicago roots still matter: "Illinois [has] a rich running history, producing some of America’s greatest runners. Growing up I always felt very proud to be a part of that and wanted to be able to add to that history. I hope every Chicago runner feels like they are a part of that rich running tradition and culture.”
