Lakewood Athletics made its international racing debut in the Boston Marathon. Lakewood is based in Chicago and is part of the elite Heartbreaker Flyer group. Spearheaded by Kevin Gunawan, it's an all-star cast of women and men who spent their collegiate years racing at schools like Loyola, Arkansas, & Michigan. The name is a nod to the street where many Loyola Rambler track athletes lived (or partied) as undergrads. Their first race together was the Shamrock Shuffle where they competed in either the mile or the 5 miler.
Boston was "boys town" for the crew sending Kevin, Connor Maura, and Mitch Baum to compete in the 126th edition of the race. Mitch crossed the line first in 2:25:00, Connor next in 2:31:51, and Kevin ran the fastest time* by a someone who stopped, hugged two people, and chugged a beer (2:49:03, *still confirming this stat).
